| On Friday, January 5th, we went
to Hugh and Sandi Smith's home in Yuba City, and from there went with
them on a 3-day foray near Fort Bragg. The four of us stayed in their 5th wheel
and enjoyed the whole weekend foraging and having meals with some of Sandi's family.
Every day we went out, we brought back a few boxes of mostly edible mushrooms. Among those were Matsutakes (Tricholoma magnivelare), small Hedgehogs (Dentinum umbilicatum), Yellow Foot Chanterelles (Cantharellus infundibuliformis), Candy Caps (Lactarius rubidus), Bleeding Agaricus (Agaricus fuscofibrillosus), Golden Chanterelles (Cantharellus formosus), White Chanterelles (Cantharellus subalbidus), Black Chanterelles (Craterellus cornucopioides), and Pig's Ears (Gomphus clavatus). Almost everywhere we went, we saw signs of pickers, even at the most remote and hard-to-reach spots. I got to take most of the edible mushrooms home with me. When I got them home, I cleaned and cooked everything. The best taste came from the Matsutake, and the best texture came from the small Hedgehogs. All were wonderful!
